Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

We are looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our client’s design team in Exeter. You will be responsible for creating production‑ready designs, specifying new products, and maintaining the existing product range while working closely with the Technical Engineering Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Take concepts through to detailed engineering drawings ready for manufacture.
• Determine suitable manufacturing methods for both in‑house and external production.
• Conduct DFMEA at project start and monitor corrective actions.
• Perform tolerance analysis to ensure manufacturability and product function.
• Collaborate with Development, Production Engineering, and Purchasing to implement design‑for‑manufacture principles.
• Optimise designs to reduce cost, improve efficiency, and maintain quality.
• Generate Bill of Materials spreadsheets to support cost estimation.
• Maintain up‑to‑date product progress feedback sheets.

Required profile

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent proven engineering background.
• Demonstrated experience taking products from prototype to mass production.
• Strong knowledge of sheet‑metal manufacturing processes.
• Hands‑on experience creating DFMEA reports and acting on findings.
• Proven ability to carry out tolerance build‑up analysis and resolve issues.
