Mechanical Fitter – Transmission & Gearbox Specialist

About the role

We are seeking experienced Mechanical Fitters to join a large engineering workshop in Croydon. You will work on transmission systems, gearboxes and rotating equipment, ensuring high standards of safety, quality and efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Read and interpret technical drawings, including end floats and gear backlash.
• Disassemble, clean, inspect and re‑assemble mechanical systems, especially transmissions and gearboxes.
• Use precision measuring equipment to assess component condition.
• Operate overhead and jib cranes to move heavy equipment safely.
• Utilise workshop tools such as air tools, abrasive wheels and hydraulic presses.
• Carry out testing, basic wiring and mechanical fitting as required.
• Maintain housekeeping and adhere to health & safety standards.
• Participate in daily stand‑up meetings and improvement activities.
• Complete technical documentation throughout the work process.

Required profile

• Minimum four years of mechanical fitting experience, preferably on transmissions, gearboxes and rotating equipment.
• Apprentice training or equivalent qualification.
• Good understanding of machining practices.
• Experience in safety‑critical environments (e.g., rail) is advantageous.
• Flexible approach to meet customer demands.
• Strong manual dexterity and ability to read engineering drawings.
• Effective team player with full proficiency in English.

What we offer

• Salary £30,000 – £43,000 per year (dependent on experience) plus bonus.
• 36.5‑hour work week (07:00‑15:00 Mon‑Thu, 07:00‑13:30 Fri).
