Mechanical Maintenance Engineer

About the role

Our client is seeking a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer (known internally as a Mechanical Fitter) to join their in‑house engineering team. You will work hands‑on with plant and equipment, supporting planned maintenance and responding to breakdowns to keep production running safely and reliably.

Key responsibilities

• Diagnose and repair mechanical faults on production equipment.
• Support safe and efficient operation of specialist machinery.
• Work with hydraulic, pneumatic and drive‑chain systems.
• Replace and align bearings.
• Assist with fabrication and welding tasks where required.
• Collaborate closely with colleagues to minimise downtime.

Required profile

• Mechanical engineering background with experience in manufacturing environments.
• Level 3 qualification in a mechanical engineering discipline.
• Strong commitment to health and safety best practice.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work flexibly in a busy, hands‑on environment.
• Experience of fault finding on hydraulic, pneumatic and drive systems.
• Desirable: completed hands‑on apprenticeship, HNC/HND or equivalent, experience in heavy manufacturing, basic arc or MIG welding, and familiarity with electrical control systems.
