Mechanical Responsible Engineer (Nuclear Infrastructure)

About the role

As a Mechanical Responsible Engineer you will lead the mechanical design and engineering delivery for a 15‑year nuclear infrastructure programme at Sellafield. Based in Manchester (with hybrid working), you will ensure designs are delivered on time, within budget and meet the strict safety and licensing requirements of a nuclear‑licensed site.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the mechanical design scope for steam, water, compressed air, bulk chemical and sewage treatment systems.
• Coordinate with the client, Costain design teams and external partners to maintain collaborative relationships.
• Drive a design‑delivery culture that embeds carbon‑minimisation, Production Thinking and Modern Methods of Construction.
• Monitor design progress, report technical risks and ensure compliance with nuclear licensing standards.
• Oversee refurbishment, replacement and new build of on‑site and off‑site utility infrastructure.

Required profile

• Proven experience in mechanical engineering within a regulated environment, preferably nuclear or heavy‑industry.
• Ability to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance.
• Strong leadership and communication skills to influence multidisciplinary teams.

Required skills

• Mechanical design and engineering of steam, water, compressed air and chemical handling systems.
• Knowledge of nuclear site licensing requirements and safety standards.
• Experience with carbon‑minimisation and Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) principles.
• Security clearance eligibility.
