Mechanical Supervisor – Utilities Installation

About the role

We are seeking a Mechanical Supervisor to lead utilities installation on a large civil engineering project in London. The role combines hands‑on electrofusion and butt‑welding of PE pipework with day‑to‑day supervision of small work gangs, ensuring high‑quality delivery of non‑potable water, fire mains and irrigation systems.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality installation, electrofusion welding, and butt‑welding of PE pipework for non‑potable water, fire main and irrigation systems.
• Lead small teams, enforce safe working practices and maintain productivity.
• Interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and method statements accurately.
• Carry out inspections, pressure testing and produce reliable QA documentation and as‑built records.
• Coordinate daily activities, materials, equipment and site logistics to keep the programme on track.
• Identify technical issues early, propose solutions and raise design queries when needed.
• Maintain strong communication with project engineers, site managers and subcontractors.
• Champion safety and compliance, promoting best practice and a tidy work environment.
• Support continuous improvement by sharing ideas and mentoring less experienced operatives.

Required profile

• Proven background in utilities installation (water, fire, irrigation) within a civil engineering or construction environment.
• Demonstrable competency in electrofusion and butt‑welding of PE pipe systems.
• Experience supervising teams or leading work fronts with a focus on quality and safety.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to plan, coordinate resources and manage multiple tasks.
• Confident communicator able to work collaboratively with engineers, managers and site personnel.
• Understanding of site safety protocols; relevant certifications such as CSCS, EUSR or Water Hygiene are advantageous.
