Medical Examiner

About the role

The University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Medical Examiner to join its multidisciplinary team. The role involves independent review of inpatient deaths across UCLH and partner hospitals, ensuring accurate death certification and supporting families during difficult times.

Key responsibilities

• Scrutinise certified causes of death for compliance with national protocols and legal requirements.
• Collaborate with clinicians, coroners, faith leaders and other stakeholders to facilitate accurate death certification.
• Conduct sensitive discussions with bereaved families to explain findings and address concerns.
• Participate in clinical governance activities, audits and training aimed at improving death certification processes and patient safety.
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of mortality review procedures across multiple specialist hospitals.

Required profile

• Qualified medical professional with relevant experience in death certification or mortality review.
• Resilient, clinically credible and demonstrable integrity.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to engage with a diverse range of people.
• Commitment to high‑quality, independent review and patient safety.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of national death certification guidelines and legal requirements.
• Experience in multidisciplinary collaboration with clinicians, coroners and external partners.
• Ability to conduct sensitive conversations with families.
• Understanding of clinical governance and audit processes.
