Medical Reviewer – Part‑time Remote Role

About the role
The Medical Reviewer provides independent, statutory review of death certification across Scotland, ensuring accuracy, improving public health data, and strengthening clinical governance. Working part‑time (three days per week) on a permanent contract, the role is home‑based with occasional travel and on‑call duties.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct timely, consistent reviews of Medical Certificates of Cause of Death (MCCD) for accuracy and completeness.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with certifying doctors, health boards and other stakeholders.
- Provide education, guidance and support to doctors on death certification standards.
- Contribute to Healthcare Improvement Scotland’s Clinical Engagement Strategy and broader quality‑improvement initiatives.
- Participate in an on‑call rota (approximately 1 in 9) to address urgent review needs.
Required profile
- Registered medical practitioner licensed by the General Medical Council.
- Extensive senior‑clinical experience with direct knowledge of death certification processes.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a track record of supporting professional development of colleagues.
- Commitment to high standards of clinical governance and public health reporting.
