Mental Health and Housing Coordination Officer

About the role

Southwark Council is seeking a Mental Health and Housing Coordination Officer to work at the intersection of housing, adult social care and NHS mental health services. The role will help residents with complex mental health needs maintain stable tenancies and achieve recovery.

Key responsibilities

• Lead coordinated responses across housing, Adult Social Care, NHS mental health services and voluntary sector partners for residents with complex needs.
• Support residents at critical points such as hospital discharge, crisis intervention, tenancy breakdown and homelessness prevention.
• Apply social work expertise to ensure housing decisions are person‑centred, trauma‑informed, legally robust and focused on recovery.
• Carry out statutory duties linked to Approved Mental Health Professional status, including Mental Health Act assessments and related decision‑making.
• Balance risk, safeguarding, capacity and individual rights using professional judgement.

Required profile

• Qualified social worker with current Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) registration.
• Proven experience working with adults with complex mental health needs within a housing or social care context.
• Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, safeguarding and tenancy law.
• Excellent communication and partnership‑working skills across public and voluntary sectors.
