Nuclear Design Engineer

About the role

Cambridge Atomworks is seeking an enthusiastic engineer with nuclear industry experience to join its design engineering team. You will be responsible for concept generation, design, analysis and documentation of mechanical and structural systems for the ODIN micro‑reactor, guiding the project from early concepts through licensing and deployment.

Key responsibilities

• Design reactor components such as vessels, pipework, mechanical and thermal‑management systems, and instrumentation layouts.
• Design deployment equipment including fuel‑handling and lifting systems.
• Capture and detail technical requirements for all components.
• Perform engineering calculations and simulations (structural, thermal, stress) to validate designs.
• Conduct optioneering, down‑selection and produce 2D/3D CAD drawings, P&ID and design documentation.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, materials, safety, licensing).
• Communicate with consultants, manufacturers and supply‑chain partners.
• Ensure compliance with nuclear codes and standards (ASME, ANSI, regulatory guidance).
• Participate in design reviews, failure‑mode analysis and regulatory documentation.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering or a related field.
• Several years of engineering experience in a highly regulated environment, preferably nuclear.
• Strong understanding of the engineering design process.
• Excellent problem‑solving and communication abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD tools for 2D/3D modelling.
• Structural, thermal and stress analysis capabilities.
• Knowledge of ASME and ANSI nuclear codes and regulatory standards.
• Experience creating P&ID and detailed engineering drawings.
