Operations Team Leader – Household Waste Recycling Centre

About the role

As the Operations Team Leader at Veolia’s Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Newport, you will drive safe, efficient daily operations while championing sustainability and customer service. You will lead a team of Recycling Operatives on a 4‑on/4‑off shift pattern, ensuring the site meets performance and environmental standards.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee day‑to‑day running of the HWRC, maintaining safety, efficiency and compliance.
• Supervise, coach and support a team of Recycling Operatives to achieve high performance.
• Promote a strong health & safety culture for staff, contractors, visitors and the public.
• Deliver excellent customer service, handling queries and complaints professionally.
• Ensure compliance with waste permits, environmental regulations, planning conditions and Veolia policies.
• Support recycling and recovery targets by ensuring correct sorting and processing of materials.
• Provide training, keep accurate training records and identify maintenance or improvement needs.
• Perform general site housekeeping, including cleaning and assisting with material sorting.

Required profile

• Previous experience in recycling, waste management, industrial or similar operational environments.
• Demonstrated experience supervising or supporting teams.
• Strong commitment to health & safety and environmental compliance.
• Ability to communicate effectively with staff, customers and external parties.
