Part‑time School Caretaker – Facilities & Safety

About the role

This part‑time position supports the daily operation of a school by ensuring the premises are secure, well‑maintained and ready for use. Working split shifts on weekdays, you will be the first point of contact for building security, routine maintenance and health‑and‑safety checks.

Key responsibilities

• Lock and secure the school each morning, monitor access and maintain security logs.
• Carry out minor repairs such as changing light bulbs, fixing door handles, key cutting and assembling flat‑pack furniture.
• Paint, decorate and perform basic decorating tasks; report larger issues to contractors.
• Assist with emergency cleaning, keep communal areas tidy and support event set‑up.
• Maintain outdoor areas – litter picking, basic gardening, leaf blowing and winter gritting.
• Conduct routine health‑and‑safety checks on fire alarms, emergency lighting and water systems.
• Receive deliveries, move furniture and manage stock of cleaning and maintenance supplies.
• Work three weeks during school holidays to prepare the site for re‑opening.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a caretaker, facilities or maintenance role (preferred but not essential).
• Basic DIY skills and a good understanding of health‑and‑safety procedures.
• Reliable, punctual and able to work independently.
• Willingness to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
• Friendly, approachable with good communication skills and flexibility to adapt to changing school needs.

Required skills

• Basic DIY maintenance (light‑bulb replacement, door‑handle repair, key cutting).
• Health‑and‑safety awareness for routine building checks.

What we offer

• £15.00 per hour, paid hourly.
• Split‑shift pattern (7:00‑9:30 am and 3:00‑6:00 pm weekdays) or afternoon‑only shift.
• 52‑week contract with 42 working weeks per year.
