Pastoral Manager – Secondary School (Barking & Dagenham)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Pastoral Manager to join a welcoming secondary school in Barking & Dagenham. You will work closely with senior leaders, heads of year and external agencies to support students facing social, emotional or behavioural challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Lead pastoral care and wellbeing for assigned year groups.
• Build positive relationships with students, parents/carers and staff.
• Support students with behavioural, emotional and attendance concerns.
• Proactively improve attendance, punctuality and engagement.
• Investigate incidents and implement restorative interventions.
• Maintain accurate records of progress, wellbeing and behaviour.
• Liaise with external agencies, social workers and local authority services.
• Attend safeguarding meetings and ensure timely escalation of concerns.
• Support reintegration, managed moves and return‑to‑school plans.
• Promote high standards of behaviour and a positive school culture.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a pastoral, behaviour, safeguarding or inclusion role within a secondary school.
• Excellent behaviour management and rapport‑building skills.
• Strong communication and conflict‑resolution abilities.
• Calm, resilient and empathetic approach.
• Ability to work collaboratively within a wider pastoral team.
• Good understanding of safeguarding procedures and child protection legislation.

Required skills

• Experience using school management systems such as SIMS, Arbor or Bromcom.
