Payroll Officer & Client Bookkeeper

About the role

Join a thriving accountancy practice in Newton Abbot as a Payroll Officer and Client Bookkeeper. You will split your time between managing payroll for a diverse client base and delivering bookkeeping and VAT services, building lasting client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Process end‑to‑end payroll on weekly, fortnightly, four‑weekly and monthly cycles.
• Submit accurate RTI filings, manage year‑end payroll tasks and handle pension auto‑enrolment.
• Liaise with HMRC to resolve payroll queries and support clients.
• Prepare bookkeeping records and complete VAT returns for multiple clients.
• Use accounting software such as Xero, QuickBooks, Sage 50 and Microsoft Excel.
• Act as the primary point of contact for clients, offering professional advice and day‑to‑day support.
• Assist with general office administration and support colleagues across the practice.

Required profile

• Minimum two years recent experience processing high‑volume payrolls within an accountancy practice or payroll bureau.
• Experience in bookkeeping and VAT preparation.
• Organised, accurate and able to work independently to meet deadlines.
• Strong communication skills and a client‑focused attitude.
• AAT qualifications are advantageous but not essential.
