Payroll Officer

About the role

Sheridan Maine is supporting a Bournemouth‑based client in hiring a Payroll Officer. You will own the monthly payroll cycle for around 150 employees, ensuring accuracy, compliance and timely delivery while working closely with Finance and HR.

Key responsibilities

• Take full responsibility for the end‑to‑end monthly payroll process.
• Validate, process and review all payroll inputs, maintaining a clear audit trail.
• Reconcile payroll outputs with the general ledger, HMRC submissions and pension provider data.
• Investigate variances and provide explanations for any discrepancies.
• Produce a comprehensive monthly payroll pack for Finance review.
• Process salaries, overtime, bonuses, statutory payments and adjustments.
• Manage PAYE/NIC compliance and HMRC submissions.
• Oversee pension submissions and reconciliations.
• Act as the main contact for payroll‑related queries across the business.
• Partner with Finance and HR to ensure data integrity and identify process improvements.
• Support HR administration tasks such as contract letters and system updates when capacity allows.

Required profile

• 2–3 years of end‑to‑end payroll experience in a medium‑sized organisation (100+ employees preferred).
• Strong understanding of UK payroll legislation, including PAYE, NIC, pensions and statutory payments.
• Experience producing payroll reconciliations and reporting packs.
• Exposure to HR or People team environments.
• Organised, reliable and able to meet strict monthly deadlines.
• Professional, discreet and comfortable handling sensitive data.
• Eligible to work in the UK full time without restriction.
