Pensions Consultant – Public Sector Specialist

About the role

The Pensions Consultant will act as the subject‑matter expert for West Sussex County Council’s public‑sector pension schemes. You will shape policy, ensure regulatory compliance and support senior decision‑making across the Council and its schools.

Key responsibilities

• Lead development and review of pension‑related employment policies and decisions.
• Provide expert advice on complex pension matters, including legislation, regulation and case law.
• Ensure pension decisions, disputes and queries are handled consistently and compliantly.
• Monitor national changes and best practice to keep the Council forward‑thinking.
• Support projects with pension implications such as TUPE, auto‑enrolment and policy change.
• Build strong partnerships with HR, payroll, schools and external stakeholders.

Required profile

• Demonstrated knowledge of pension regulations and practices for local government, fire, NHS or teachers’ schemes.
• Experience developing pension‑related employment policy and practice.
• Ability to provide timely, accurate advice to managers and senior leaders.
• Strong stakeholder management and relationship‑building skills.
• Confidence to challenge and drive continuous improvement.

Required skills

• In‑depth understanding of LGPS, Fire, NHS and Teachers’ Pension Schemes.
• Expertise in pension legislation, regulation and case law.
