PhD Studentship: Low Order Modelling of Rotating Detonation Engines
Department of Engineering (University of Cambridge) · Cambridge
Job description
About the role
A fully funded 4-year PhD studentship at the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with Rolls-Royce under the Industrial Doctoral Landscape Award (IDLA) scheme. The research develops a skeleton simplified model of a rotating detonation engine (RDE) using existing models, coded so that performance can be assessed with realistic thermodynamics. Validation uses higher-fidelity models (RANS and/or LES) and experiments, and the model will eventually extend to liquid fuels and integrate with a gas turbine simulation platform.
Key responsibilities
- Train in thermodynamic modelling of compressible and supersonic systems
- Translate existing thermodynamic codes for chemical modelling and detonation toolbox into open source code
- Implement existing eigenvalue simulation for determining RDE frequency and cycle properties as a function of operating conditions
- Validate the code against higher-fidelity simulations and experimental results
- Extend the code to different fuels, geometries and interfaces with compressor and turbine
- Produce periodic progress reports and engage with company specialists
- Attend international conferences and submit papers to journals
- Attend annual doctoral conferences and symposia organised by Rolls-Royce and related organisations
Required profile
- Good UK Master's degree (or overseas equivalent) in a relevant science subject (Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics), preferably with a focus on fluid mechanics and numerical methods
- Some programming experience
- Self-motivated, able to work in a team and communicate research findings effectively
Required skills
- Thermodynamic modelling of compressible and supersonic systems
- Programming, preferably Python and/or C++
What we offer
- Fully funded 4-year award covering full fees and maintenance
- Eligible for home students and a limited number of international students
To apply, send a two-page CV to the supervisor by 28 February 2027; offers are conditional on securing a PhD place, which must also be applied for separately through the university's graduate admissions portal (deadline 14 May 2027).
