Police Staff Investigator (PIP1) – 12‑month contract

About the role

The law enforcement organisation in Hampshire is hiring PIP1 Police Staff Investigators on an initial 12‑month contract. You will work on volume and priority crime investigations, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and suspects, and supporting charging decisions. Positions are available in Southampton, Portsmouth and Basingstoke and can be full‑time or part‑time.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, record and preserve evidence and intelligence from victims, witnesses and suspects.
• Conduct interviews in line with legal frameworks and investigative guidance.
• Apply arrest necessity tests, use powers such as arrest, RUI and special warnings where appropriate.
• Complete search and custody procedures, manage exhibits and case files.
• Perform victim and witness risk assessments and develop support plans.
• Analyse evidence to identify offenders and support charging decisions.
• Respond to safeguarding concerns involving vulnerable victims.
• Prepare accurate reports and maintain audit trails throughout investigations.

Required profile

• Experience of investigative work within policing or the criminal‑justice system.
• Strong understanding of the criminal‑justice process and College of Policing guidance.
• Demonstrated ability to gather evidence and solve problems.
• Willingness to undergo relevant vetting and security checks.

Required skills

• Confident use of IT systems and investigative tools.
