Police Staff Investigator (PIP1) – Volume & Priority Crime

About the role

The law enforcement organisation in Hampshire is hiring PIP1 Police Staff Investigators on an initial 12‑month contract to tackle volume and priority crime. The role involves gathering and reviewing evidence, conducting interviews, and supporting charging decisions across the criminal justice system.

Key responsibilities

• Gather, record and retain evidence and intelligence from victims, witnesses, suspects and other sources.
• Identify and pursue reasonable lines of enquiry proportionate to the offence.
• Conduct witness and suspect interviews in line with legal frameworks.
• Apply arrest necessity tests and use powers such as arrest, RUI and special warnings where appropriate.
• Complete search and custody procedures in accordance with legislation.
• Conduct victim and witness risk assessments and develop support plans.
• Liaise with colleagues and supervisors to progress investigations.
• Analyse evidence to identify offenders and support charging decisions.
• Manage exhibits, disclosure and case files according to policy.
• Respond to safeguarding concerns involving vulnerable victims.
• Prepare accurate reports and maintain audit trails throughout investigations.

Required profile

• Experience of investigative work within a policing or criminal‑justice environment.
• Strong understanding of the criminal justice system and College of Policing guidance.
• Demonstrable experience of evidence gathering and problem solving.
