Premises Officer / Caretaker – Secondary School (Temp-to-Perm)

About the role

We are seeking a reliable, proactive Premises Officer/Caretaker to join a busy secondary school in St Helens. This temp‑to‑perm position involves maintaining a safe, clean and secure environment for students, staff and visitors throughout the year.

Key responsibilities

• Open and lock the school site each day.
• Carry out routine maintenance, repairs and basic DIY tasks.
• Ensure grounds and buildings are clean, safe and well‑presented.
• Conduct health & safety checks and report hazards.
• Set up rooms for events, exams and other activities.
• Manage deliveries and support contractors on site.
• Perform security checks, including alarm system monitoring.
• Assist with emergency procedures when required.

Required profile

• Previous experience in caretaker, premises, maintenance or facilities work (preferred).
• Practical, hands‑on approach with basic maintenance abilities.
• Strong work ethic, reliability and ability to work independently.
• Good understanding of health & safety procedures.
• Willingness to work split‑shift pattern (6:00‑10:15 am and 2:45‑6:00 pm).
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
