Principal Accountant – Local Government Finance

About the role

The Principal Accountant will join a South West England local authority to shape and deliver high‑quality financial management across the council. This senior business‑partnering position provides expert financial insight to senior officers, supporting robust decision‑making for critical public services.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic financial advice and insight to senior stakeholders.
• Oversee high‑value funding streams such as the Better Care Fund and Dedicated Schools Grant.
• Lead budget setting, monitoring, closedown and advanced financial modelling.
• Drive transformation initiatives, improve governance and embed automation.
• Develop and maintain Power BI reporting tools to enhance decision‑making.
• Lead, develop and mentor finance staff and contribute to long‑term financial strategy.

Required profile

• CCAB‑qualified accountant.
• Proven experience in local government finance.
• Demonstrated ability to influence senior leaders in complex organisations.
• Track record of continuous improvement and supporting transformation programmes.
