Principal Engineer

About the role

Kier is seeking a Principal Engineer to join its Design Team in Birmingham. You will lead the delivery of complex construction engineering services, ensuring solutions are safe, compliant and innovative while supporting project teams and developing technical capability.

Key responsibilities

• Lead delivery of complex construction engineering services, including temporary works design, checking and technical assurance.
• Act as Project Lead, managing technical scope, programme, budget and client relationships from bid through to delivery.
• Oversee and contribute to design outputs such as calculations, drawings, reports and risk assessments, ensuring compliance with CDM, SHEMS and QMS.
• Identify technical risk, deliver alternative solutions and value‑engineer to improve buildability and commercial outcomes.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, support training initiatives and promote best practice across Kier Design.

Required profile

• Chartered Engineer status or membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g., CEng, MICE) with significant post‑qualification experience.
• Strong background in temporary works design, integrated with permanent works where required.
• Proven experience leading projects, managing multidisciplinary teams and engaging confidently with clients and stakeholders.
• Sound commercial awareness, with experience supporting bids, fees, programme and budget management.
• A collaborative leader who values safety, quality, innovation and continuous professional development.

Required skills

• Temporary works design.
• Design calculations and risk assessments.
• Compliance with CDM regulations.
• Knowledge of SHEMS (Safety, Health and Environmental Management Systems).
• Familiarity with QMS (Quality Management System) processes.
