Principal Forward Deployed Engineer, AI (Remote UK)

About the role

Atlassian is hiring a Principal Forward Deployed Engineer (AI) for a fully remote position open anywhere in the UK. The role sits at the forefront of applied AI, working directly with customers and cross-functional teams to deliver AI-powered solutions. It is a high-visibility, high-impact position for people who enjoy fast-paced, ambiguous environments.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design, development and deployment of AI/ML-powered solutions tailored to customer needs.
• Architect and implement application integrations using Python, JavaScript or similar languages, focusing on APIs, microservices and enterprise-scale systems.
• Analyse complex datasets to extract insights and inform product direction.
• Promote AI-augmented workflow automation in customer environments.
• Oversee end-to-end production deployment, with continuous evaluation, monitoring and improvement.
• Navigate risk and compliance requirements, including AI risk assessment, data privacy (GDPR) and regulatory frameworks.
• Mentor junior engineers and communicate technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Align technical solutions with business objectives.

Required profile

• 10+ years of experience in backend software development.
• 5+ years delivering AI/ML solutions in production, including as a founding or forward-deployed engineer in 0-to-1 products.
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex, ambiguous problems in rapidly changing environments.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, influencing cross-functional teams without formal authority.
• Experience with AI risk assessment, data privacy and compliance (e.g. GDPR).
• Strategic thinking and a track record of aligning technical solutions to business goals.

Required skills

• Deep expertise in applied AI/ML, including generative AI, LLMs and agent-based frameworks.
• Proficiency in Python, JavaScript or similar languages, with experience of APIs, microservices and enterprise integration.
• Nice to have: Atlassian Intelligence, Rovo AI or AI-powered Atlassian features; regulated industries such as finance or healthcare; mentoring or leading engineering teams.
