Principal Lawyer – People (Hybrid)

About the role

We are seeking a Principal Lawyer – People to lead our legal services team in Newbury. This hybrid position combines high‑level legal work with line‑management responsibilities, supporting the delivery of legal advice across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of high‑level matters in at least one area of law covered by the team.
• Supervise and line‑manage four team members, providing guidance and performance reviews.
• Assist the Legal Services Manager in day‑to‑day management of the legal department.
• Support the provision of legal services across teams and deputise for the Legal Services Manager or Service Lead when required.
• Contribute to the development and implementation of good governance and democratic frameworks within the local authority.

Required profile

• Qualified practising Solicitor, Barrister or Chartered Legal Executive with rights to conduct litigation.
• Experience working within local government services and an understanding of the democratic framework.
• Knowledge of good governance in a local authority setting and adults social care law.
• Ability to lead, motivate and develop a small legal team.
