Principal Software Engineer

About the role

Our client, a fast‑growing software and data‑science consultancy, is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to lead the design and delivery of high‑performance applications across defence, energy, transport and health sectors. The role is hybrid, with three days per week in the Portsmouth office.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and deliver complex software solutions using C/C++, C# and Python.
• Apply mathematical and computational methods to real‑world problems, including wargames, modelling & simulation, autonomous systems, digital twins and synthetic environments.
• Provide technical consulting, lead project delivery and act as a trusted advisor to stakeholders.
• Build and maintain customer relationships, contribute to bid proposals and manage line‑management responsibilities.

Required profile

• Minimum 15 years of experience designing and implementing performant software applications.
• Proven ability to apply mathematical or statistical techniques to scientific or applied challenges.
• Strong stakeholder management skills, including influencing, negotiating and conflict resolution.
• Experience in writing proposals, coordinating bids and leading teams.
