Process Control and Automation Inspector

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Process Control and Automation Inspector to join the Primary Operations team at Tata Steel in Port Talbot. The role focuses on maintaining and optimising the hot‑rolled mill, ensuring smooth production of steel coils.

Key responsibilities

• Provide engineering support to optimise production in slab yards and reheating furnaces.
• Act as the first point of contact for hot‑mill output, diagnosing and rectifying faults on plant‑end devices, instrumentation, and control systems.
• Issue electrical permits once authorised and competent.
• Maintain strict health and safety compliance and implement company policies.
• Respond promptly to engineering, quality, and safety issues as they arise.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for plant performance.

Required profile

• Completed an approved apprenticeship with at least NVQ Level 3 Electrical (or equivalent).
• Proven experience in a similar role with a willingness to undertake further training.
• Strong technical knowledge of fault finding and electrical systems.
• Flexibility to work overtime during breakdowns and planned maintenance.

Required skills

• PLC programming and troubleshooting.
• Instrumentation and control‑system expertise.
• Understanding of DC & AC drives and motor control.
• Low‑voltage authorisation.
• HMI development and networking.
