Process Operator – Wastewater Treatment

About the role

United Utilities, in partnership with Reed Talent Solutions, is seeking a Process Operator to join the team at the Carlisle Wastewater Treatment Works. The role involves operating and monitoring treatment assets to ensure regulatory compliance and protect community health.

Key responsibilities

• Operate and monitor wastewater treatment assets in line with regulatory and customer service standards.
• Carry out sampling, readings, analysis and cleaning activities in accordance with UWWTD and MCERTS guidelines.
• Record and report operational performance data accurately and on schedule.
• Identify under‑performance, implement corrective actions and escalate risks to the Process Controller.
• Complete scheduled operational and maintenance tasks, including reactive work orders.
• Respond to asset failures, take appropriate corrective actions and support local performance improvements.
• Use corporate systems to log work orders and process data, and collaborate with planning teams and field engineers.

Required profile

• Valid UK driving licence.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Resilient, self‑motivated and physically fit for outdoor work in all weather conditions.
• Good communication skills and a proactive attitude.

Required skills

• Basic computer literacy (data entry, email communication).
• Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and assets.
• Understanding of environmental output standards and compliance procedures.

What we offer

• Pay rate of £18.46 per hour (PAYE).
• Shift pattern: Tuesday‑Friday 14:00‑22:00, Saturday 09:00‑17:00.
• Overtime at time‑and‑a‑half or double time.
• Six‑month fixed‑term contract with potential for permanent employment.
• PPE provided and full training supplied.
