Project Engineer – West Cumbria

About the role

We are seeking a Project Engineer to lead the delivery of complex civil engineering projects for Careys Civil Engineering in West Cumbria. Working closely with Project and Construction Managers, you will ensure projects are executed safely, on time and to the highest quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Ensure technical compliance with contracts and coordinate with subcontractors, consultants and suppliers.
• Monitor progress, manage delays, variations and risks, and support cost monitoring and claims.
• Resolve setting‑out issues, oversee engineering budgets, control systems and as‑built documentation.
• Maintain communication with designers, incorporate value engineering and statutory requirements.
• Take responsibility for site quality systems, inspections, testing and NCR resolution.
• Lead and develop the engineering team, managing competency and performance.
• Approve material suitability, oversee procurement, programme planning and productivity analysis.
• Prepare risk assessments, method statements and ensure compliance with safety regulations, including high‑risk temporary works.

Required profile

• Strong civil engineering background with experience on complex construction projects.
• Proven ability to lead engineering teams and manage senior engineers.
• Experience in design management, temporary works design and contract administration.
• Solid understanding of health & safety, quality and environmental obligations.

Required skills

• Technical knowledge of civil engineering design and construction processes.
• Competence in setting‑out, budgeting and as‑built documentation.
• Ability to produce risk assessments, method statements and temporary works designs.
