Quarry Operative

About the role

Breedon Group is seeking a reliable Quarry Operative to join its Shap Blue Quarry & Asphalt Plant team in Cumbria. You will work hands‑on in a busy quarry environment, helping to extract, crush and process aggregates while ensuring safety and efficiency.

Key responsibilities

• Operate mobile and fixed plant such as dump trucks, loading shovels, crushers and screeners safely and efficiently.
• Assist in the extraction, crushing and processing of raw materials to meet production targets.
• Carry out routine checks, cleaning and basic maintenance on machinery and equipment.
• Load and unload materials for transport or further processing.
• Follow daily work schedules and production instructions from supervisors.
• Conduct regular safety checks, report hazards, defects or incidents and ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations.
• Maintain a clean, safe and organised quarry site and support site inspections and operational audits.
• Adapt flexibly to different roles and tasks as required by site needs.

Required profile

• Competence in operating plant or machinery (e.g., loading shovel, excavator, dumper truck); CPCS or MPQC card is advantageous.
• Basic mechanical knowledge with the ability to perform simple maintenance tasks.
• Understanding of health and safety practices and willingness to follow procedures.
• Good communication, teamwork and a safety‑focused attitude.
• Reliability, punctuality and self‑motivation; able to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

Required skills

• Operation of mobile plant (dump trucks, loading shovels).
• Operation of fixed plant (crushers, screeners).
• Basic mechanical maintenance.
• CPCS or MPQC certification (advantageous).
