Reception 1:1 Learning Support Assistant – Croydon Primary School

About the role

This position offers a graduate the chance to gain hands‑on SEND experience in a welcoming primary school. You will work one‑to‑one with a Reception pupil who is likely to receive a formal diagnosis for ASC and ADHD, supporting their early educational journey.

Key responsibilities

• Provide dedicated 1:1 support for a Reception pupil presenting with challenging behaviour.
• Build a trusting relationship to help the child feel safe, engaged and ready to learn.
• Use calming, distraction and de‑escalation strategies during periods of dysregulation.
• Encourage positive social interactions, communication and emotional regulation.
• Collaborate closely with the class teacher, SENDCo and parents to support the child's development.

Required profile

• A 2:1 or First‑Class degree from a leading UK university is desirable.
• Genuine passion for supporting children with SEND.
• Calm, patient and resilient with confidence to stay positive in challenging situations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to build positive relationships.
• Previous experience with children, SEND or challenging behaviour is advantageous but not essential.

Required skills

• Calming, distraction and de‑escalation techniques.
• Basic understanding of SEND, behaviour management and safeguarding principles.
• Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, SEND coordinators and external professionals.
