Recreation Craftsperson – Forest of Dean

About the role

The Recreation Craftsperson supports the Forest of Dean recreation team by keeping visitor sites, car parks and facilities clean, tidy and safe. Based at Beechenhurst, you will work outdoors across the forest, performing a variety of maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure a high‑quality visitor experience.

Key responsibilities

• Collect and dispose of rubbish from bins daily, perform litter picking and waste segregation.
• Unlock site gates and barriers each morning according to seasonal schedules.
• Maintain and repair signage, fences, play‑area safety equipment and other forest furniture.
• Seasonal mowing, strimming and vegetation management, including certified chemical spraying when required.
• Inspect and service public toilets – restock supplies, unblock, mop and report major faults.
• Assist with occasional out‑of‑hours events and public holiday duties as part of a rotating roster.

Required profile

• Resilient and adaptable, able to work in all weather conditions.
• Physically fit for demanding outdoor tasks and able to travel on foot, bike or vehicle.
• Willing to work a seven‑day rota including weekends and public holidays.
• Good communication skills for interaction with staff, volunteers and visitors.

Required skills

• Operation of mowing and strimming equipment.
• Basic carpentry and sign installation.
• Fence repair and painting.
• Certified chemical spraying for vegetation control.
• Waste segregation and recycling procedures.
