Recreation Craftsperson – Forest of Dean

About the role

The Recreation Craftsperson supports the Forest of Dean recreation team by keeping visitor sites, car parks and facilities clean, tidy and safe. Based at Beechenhurst, the role involves travelling across the forest on foot, bike or vehicle and working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Collect and dispose of rubbish from bins daily, perform litter picking and empty waste containers.
• Segregate recyclable waste from non‑recyclable streams and transport waste to depots.
• Unlock site gates, barriers and buildings each morning in line with opening times.
• Maintain and repair signs, fences, play‑area fall‑protection materials and faulty equipment.
• Seasonal strimming, mowing and occasional chemical spraying (with appropriate certification).
• Inspect public toilets, replenish supplies, unblock and mop as needed.
• Travel across the forest on foot, bike and off‑road vehicles to carry out duties.
• Work a seven‑day rota covering weekends, public holidays and occasional out‑of‑hours events.

Required profile

• Resilient and adaptable, able to work in unpredictable outdoor environments.
• Physically capable of demanding manual tasks and able to work alone or with volunteers.
• Willing to work in all weather conditions year‑round.
• Committed to health, safety and environmental standards.

Required skills

• Basic maintenance and repair (sign installation, fence repair, painting).
• Use of hand tools.
• Operation of off‑road vehicles.
• Certified chemical spraying (where required).
