Research Associate in Native Ambient Mass Spectrometry

About the role

The Rosalind Franklin Institute is seeking a postdoctoral Research Associate to develop native ambient mass spectrometry imaging tools. You will design and build instrumentation, integrate it with structural biology techniques, and collaborate with internal and external partners to advance spatial proteomics.

Key responsibilities

• Develop new tools for native ambient mass spectrometry imaging, including nano‑DESI.
• Design, model and construct instrumentation for chemical imaging.
• Collaborate with biological and mass‑spectrometry experts to optimise MSI conditions for specific projects.
• Integrate multi‑modal data from imaging, omics and structural biology sources.
• Plan and conduct experiments, analyse results and deliver outputs such as research reports or patent applications.
• Contribute to project teams, supporting wider Franklin challenges.
• Supervise students or visitors and mentor junior researchers.

Required profile

• PhD in chemistry, biochemistry, analytical science or a related discipline.
• Experience in at least two of the following: native mass spectrometry, top‑down mass spectrometry, mass spectrometry imaging, ion‑source development, instrument development.
• Proven ability to work independently and creatively on complex scientific problems.
• Experience supervising or mentoring junior researchers is desirable.
