Research Engineer – AI Specialist

About the role

SMT is looking for a Research Engineer with a focus on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning to join its Research and Development team in Nottingham. You will work on cutting‑edge CAE software projects, prototype AI‑driven solutions, and support both internal and client‑facing activities.

Key responsibilities

• Research and prototype AI/ML applications for SMT’s MASTA software and related processes.
• Write Python code that interacts with MASTA via its API and implement new functionality directly into the platform.
• Collect and analyse data, using commercial CAE and CAD tools where required.
• Explore new engineering methods, workflow efficiencies, and potential simulation techniques for driveline and broader applications.
• Support sales and marketing through technical case studies, conference participation, and academic publishing.
• Assist the software support team with client training sessions and technical assistance on projects.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in a numerical science (2:1 or higher); PhD is a plus.
• Strong analytical mindset, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.
• Effective communication and presentation skills.

Required skills

• Python programming, including experience with AI/ML libraries such as Scikit‑Learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Keras.
• Familiarity with MASTA API or similar CAE software interfaces.
• Knowledge of 3D geometry, mesh generation, optimisation, graph neural networks, or geometric deep learning (desirable).
• Experience with C# and .NET (desirable).
• Exposure to commercial CAE/CAD tools (beneficial).
