Risk & Compliance Manager

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Risk & Compliance Manager to join the central Risk and Compliance team of Birketts LLP, a top‑50 UK law firm. The role will help ensure the firm meets its regulatory obligations, maintains Lexcel and Conveyancing Quality Scheme accreditation, and supports internal audit functions across the business.

Key responsibilities

• Lead day‑to‑day supervision, mentoring and professional development of the compliance team.
• Oversee regulatory compliance under the Solicitors Regulation Authority and related legislation.
• Manage internal audit processes, including preparation for Lexcel and Conveyancing Quality Scheme assessments.
• Assess upcoming regulations and high‑risk corporate issues, providing advice to business units.
• Support client onboarding by embedding risk‑based controls and best‑practice procedures.
• Collaborate with the Head of Risk & Compliance and the other Risk & Compliance Manager to drive continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Proven experience in risk and compliance within a professional services or legal environment.
• Strong understanding of Solicitors Regulation Authority requirements and legal accreditation standards.
• Excellent judgment, analytical ability and proactive approach to problem solving.
• Leadership experience managing a team of compliance professionals.
• Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively across functions.

Required skills

• Knowledge of Lexcel and Conveyancing Quality Scheme standards.
• Familiarity with internal audit methodologies.
• Understanding of regulatory compliance frameworks for law firms.
