About the role
The Rural Emergency Practitioner (Specialty Grade) will be the sole doctor in the Emergency Department of the Western Isles Hospital, delivering acute care to patients of all ages in a remote, rural setting. You will join a multidisciplinary team of specialist doctors and experienced Emergency Nurse Practitioners, working 12‑12.5 hour day and night shifts.
Key responsibilities
- Manage the full spectrum of acute presentations in the Emergency Department.
- Make safe, timely clinical decisions and collaborate with retrieval services and secondary/tertiary centres when advanced care is needed.
- Work alongside Emergency Nurse Practitioners, on‑call consultants and senior staff to ensure comprehensive patient care.
- Participate in ongoing professional development, including the Credential in Remote and Rural Health.
Required profile
- Enthusiastic and innovative approach to rural emergency medicine.
- Ability to work independently during night shifts while coordinating with on‑call specialists.
- Commitment to high‑quality, risk‑aware clinical practice.
- Registration with the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme.
Required skills
- Emergency Medicine knowledge and acute care expertise.
- Understanding of remote and rural health delivery.
