School Caretaker – Full‑time, Permanent

About the role

We are seeking a reliable School Caretaker to join a well‑established school in East Hertfordshire. You will be responsible for the day‑to‑day operation, maintenance and security of the school premises, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for pupils, staff and visitors.

Key responsibilities

• Open and lock the school site each day.
• Carry out routine maintenance, repairs and general DIY tasks.
• Maintain cleanliness, safety and presentation of buildings and grounds.
• Conduct regular health‑and‑safety and fire‑safety checks.
• Set up rooms for meetings, assemblies and events.
• Liaise with contractors and oversee on‑site works.
• Report and resolve maintenance issues.
• Assist with deliveries and move furniture or equipment.
• Perform seasonal duties such as gritting pathways.
• Ensure the school remains secure and compliant with health‑and‑safety requirements.

Required profile

• Previous experience in caretaking, facilities, maintenance or site management.
• Strong practical DIY and maintenance abilities.
• Proactive, flexible and hands‑on approach.
• Good organisational and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and prioritise workloads.
• Commitment to maintaining a safe, clean and welcoming environment.
• Experience in a school setting is beneficial but not essential.
