School Caretaker

About the role

We are seeking a proactive School Caretaker to maintain a safe, secure and welcoming environment for students and staff. Working closely with the Facilities Manager, you will be responsible for the day‑to‑day upkeep of the school premises and grounds.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out routine repairs, maintenance and DIY tasks across the building and grounds.
• Ensure the site is clean, safe and well presented at all times.
• Open and secure the school, monitor security and report any concerns.
• Perform regular health & safety, fire alarm, emergency lighting and water hygiene checks.
• Assist with minor refurbishment projects and preventative maintenance.
• Oversee external contractors and ensure compliance with safety procedures.
• Monitor heating, lighting and utility systems.
• Maintain outdoor areas, including litter picking and general grounds upkeep.
• Support setup of rooms, meetings, assemblies and school events, moving furniture and equipment as needed.
• Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergency repairs, keeping accurate records of inspections.

Required profile

• Previous experience in caretaking, maintenance, facilities or premises management.
• Good practical skills for basic repairs and maintenance.
• Knowledge of health & safety procedures and compliance requirements.
• Ability to work independently, manage workload and prioritize tasks.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Reliable, flexible and proactive attitude.

What we offer

• Permanent, full‑time contract with regular hours (7:30‑11:30 & 15:00‑18:15).
• Competitive salary between £28,500 and £30,500 per year.
