Science Technician – Part‑time (4 hrs/day)

About the role

We are seeking a part‑time Science Technician to support the science department of a secondary school in Darwen. Working four hours each weekday, you will help deliver safe and engaging practical lessons across biology, chemistry and physics.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare, set up and clear away equipment, materials and chemicals for practical sessions.
• Support teachers in delivering curriculum‑aligned experiments.
• Maintain, clean and store laboratory equipment, performing routine checks and maintenance.
• Manage inventory, conduct stock control and order consumables to keep the department well‑supplied.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, including COSHH risk assessments.
• Prepare chemical solutions according to departmental guidance.
• Assist with the organisation of labs, prep rooms and storage areas, and support students during practical work.
• Record inventory, equipment maintenance and safety checks, and help with displays and science events.

Required profile

• Previous experience as a Science Technician, Laboratory Technician or similar role, preferably within a school setting.
• Strong understanding of laboratory procedures and health‑and‑safety standards.
• Excellent organisational abilities and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a wider school team.
• Good communication skills for interacting with staff and students.
• A science‑related qualification is advantageous but not mandatory.
