Secondary Tutor (Emotionally Based School Avoidance / Reintegration Support)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced and compassionate Secondary Tutor to work one‑to‑one with a Year 10 female student who is currently out of education due to school refusal. The role begins with face‑to‑face sessions at the student’s home and will transition to school‑based tuition when appropriate, supporting her academic progress and emotional wellbeing.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver personalised 1:1 tuition in Maths, English and Science at Key Stage 4 level.
• Adapt lessons to the student’s individual learning needs and pace.
• Build a trusting relationship that encourages confidence, resilience and motivation.
• Help close learning gaps and prepare the student for a successful return to school.
• Provide regular feedback and progress updates after each session.
• Follow safeguarding procedures and maintain accurate records.

Required profile

• Experience tutoring or teaching secondary‑aged students.
• Background working with learners who have experienced school refusal, anxiety or other barriers to education.
• Calm, patient and empathetic approach with strong relationship‑building skills.
• Ability to adapt teaching strategies and manage behaviour effectively.
• Good understanding of safeguarding responsibilities for vulnerable young people.

Required skills

• Proficiency in delivering Maths, English and Science tuition at Key Stage 4.
• Knowledge of trauma‑informed and emotionally responsive teaching practices.
• Experience with safeguarding and child protection protocols.
