SEMH English Teacher (Secondary)

About the role
We are looking for an enthusiastic English teacher to support secondary students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. The role involves delivering tailored English lessons to learners with a range of additional needs in a supportive, inclusive environment.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging English lessons that meet the individual needs of learners with SEMH and SEND.
- Develop schemes of work, medium‑term and short‑term plans to promote progress and engagement.
- Differentiate learning so every student can access the curriculum and achieve success.
- Monitor, assess and record student progress, providing constructive feedback and setting ambitious yet achievable targets.
- Produce and review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs), SEN Passports and contribute to annual EHCP reviews and provision mapping.
- Promote literacy across the curriculum while supporting students to overcome barriers to learning.
- Deliver targeted interventions to accelerate progress and raise attainment.
- Build positive, trusting relationships with students and provide pastoral support where required.
- Collaborate with teaching assistants, HLTAs and colleagues to ensure the best possible outcomes for learners.
- Maintain high expectations for behaviour, engagement and achievement in line with the school’s behaviour policy.
- Create a stimulating, safe and well‑organised classroom environment.
- Communicate effectively with parents and carers regarding student progress and development.
- Contribute to the wider life of the school by attending meetings, training and professional development opportunities.
Required profile
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience working with young people who have SEMH and SEND needs such as ASD, ADHD, PDA, OCD and ODD.
- Ability to plan and deliver differentiated English lessons in one‑to‑one or small‑group settings.
- Strong assessment and progress‑monitoring skills.
- Excellent communication skills for interacting with students, parents and multidisciplinary team members.
