SEMH Learning Support Assistant – Newton Abbot

About the role

Teaching Personnel is seeking compassionate individuals to join schools in Newton Abbot as SEMH Learning Support Assistants. You will work closely with pupils who need additional emotional and behavioural support, helping them access learning and develop resilience.

Key responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small‑group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
• Implement behaviour support plans, emotional regulation strategies and EHCP targets.
• Assist pupils in managing anxiety, trauma‑related responses and challenging behaviour.
• Promote positive relationships, self‑esteem and social development.
• Support pupils during transitions, unstructured times and throughout the school day.
• Collaborate with class teachers, SENCo and pastoral teams to ensure consistent support.

Required profile

• Experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour or emotional needs (desirable but not essential).
• Transferable experience from care, youth work, mentoring, psychology, coaching or family SEND settings.
• Calm, patient and resilient approach.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Genuine passion for pupils’ emotional wellbeing and development.
