SEN Teaching Assistant – SEMH (Specialist School)

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEMH school in Halewood, Liverpool. The role involves supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, helping them build confidence, develop positive relationships and achieve their potential.

Key responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small‑group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
• Build trusting relationships that promote engagement and emotional wellbeing.
• Assist pupils in managing behaviour using positive behaviour support and de‑escalation techniques.
• Support teachers in delivering differentiated, engaging learning activities.
• Encourage development of social skills, emotional regulation, resilience and independence.
• Help pupils work towards individual learning goals and EHCP outcomes.
• Collaborate with teachers, pastoral staff, therapists and external professionals.
• Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour and engagement.
• Maintain a safe, structured and inclusive learning environment.
• Provide personal care or additional support where required.

Required profile

• Previous experience working with children or young people with SEMH, behavioural needs or other SEN (essential).
• Experience supporting pupils with challenging behaviour in education, care or youth work is highly desirable.
• Calm, patient and resilient approach with the ability to stay positive under pressure.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Ability to set clear boundaries while showing empathy.
• Level 2 or Level 3 Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification (desirable).
• Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or willingness to obtain one.
