SEND Teaching Assistant – Autism & Complex Needs

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to join a specialist SEN school in Oldham. The role is full‑time, Monday to Friday, term‑time only, and focuses on supporting pupils with autism and complex additional needs.

Key responsibilities

• Provide one‑to‑one and small‑group support to pupils throughout the school day.
• Implement EHCP targets, communication strategies and behaviour support plans.
• Use visual timetables, PECS, Makaton or other appropriate communication approaches.
• Assist pupils with sensory regulation, structured routines and independence skills.
• Promote positive behaviour and engagement in learning activities.
• Collaborate closely with teachers, therapists and families.

Required profile

• Previous experience supporting pupils with autism and SEND.
• Strong understanding of complex communication and sensory needs.
• Ability to manage challenging situations calmly and professionally.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Genuine passion for supporting children and young people with additional needs.

Required skills

• Experience with visual support tools such as PECS and Makaton.
• Knowledge of sensory regulation techniques.
• Familiarity with implementing EHCP outcomes.
