SEND Teaching Assistant – Support Children with Complex Needs

About the role

We are looking for a dedicated SEND Teaching Assistant to work in a specialist school in Leeds, supporting pupils with complex special educational needs, including autism, non‑verbal communication and challenging behaviours.

Key responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small‑group support to pupils with complex SEND requirements.
• Use alternative communication methods such as PECS, Makaton, visual timetables and other aids.
• Implement positive behaviour management and de‑escalation techniques.
• Assist with personal care when needed.
• Collaborate with teachers, therapists and other professionals to deliver individual support plans.
• Promote a safe, inclusive and engaging learning environment.

Required profile

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with complex SEND needs, especially autism.
• Experience working with non‑verbal individuals and using communication strategies.
• Ability to manage challenging behaviour calmly and consistently.
• Resilient, empathetic and committed to positive outcomes.
• Experience in a specialist school, SEND provision or similar setting is desirable.
• Training such as Team Teach, MAPA or other positive behaviour management is advantageous.

Required skills

• Knowledge of PECS, Makaton and visual timetable systems.
• Positive behaviour management techniques.
• Basic personal care support.
