Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

As a Backend Engineer at Orbital Industries you will design, build and operate the core systems powering CurieOS, the company’s AI operating system. You will work across the full backend stack – APIs, data pipelines, graph databases, event‑driven architectures and the infrastructure that connects AI models to scientific tools used daily.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain APIs, services and data pipelines with a focus on reliability and performance.
• Build and operate integrations between AI models, scientific tools and internal workflows.
• Own the full lifecycle of backend features from design through deployment, monitoring and iteration.
• Improve system observability, reliability and performance through instrumentation and optimisation.
• Collaborate with ML researchers, product engineers and domain experts to translate requirements into robust backend solutions.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and help shape the technical direction of CurieOS.

Required profile

• Proven experience designing, building and operating production backend systems (APIs, data pipelines, event‑driven architectures).
• Strong programming skills in at least one backend language such as Python, Go, Rust, Java or Kotlin.
• Experience with relational and/or graph databases, message queues, caching layers and cloud infrastructure.
• Track record of shipping reliable, maintainable software used by real users.
• Ability to reason about system design, data modelling and engineering trade‑offs and communicate them effectively.
