Senior COBOL Developer

About the role

Partnerscale is seeking a Senior COBOL Developer to maintain and evolve its core platform as part of a long‑term migration programme. The role is hybrid, with one day per week in the Bicester office, and offers a competitive salary and corporate benefits.

Key responsibilities

• Write new COBOL programs and enhance existing ones across the platform.
• Own batch processing and online transaction flows, working with copybooks, sort utilities and file handlers.
• Perform code archaeology and data analysis on legacy modules.
• Support release management and code promotion across environments.
• Prepare modules for the migration workstream in collaboration with the wider team.
• Mentor junior developers and help define technical standards.

Required profile

• Several years of hands‑on COBOL development in a production environment.
• Experience with Acu COBOL/Acucorp/extend or comparable Micro Focus, RM COBOL or other distributed COBOL implementations.
• Comfort with COBOL copybooks, sort utilities and indexed file systems such as Vision or ISAM.
• Working knowledge of at least one relational database (SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL or DB2).
• Familiarity with Linux/UNIX servers and shell scripting.
• Exposure to source‑control and code‑promotion tooling.
