Senior Data Engineer

About the role

Menzies is looking for a Senior Data Engineer to lead the design, build and operation of its Google Cloud Platform data warehouse. The role will create a trusted, secure and accessible data foundation that powers reporting, automation and AI across the firm.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and delivery of scalable, resilient data pipelines into BigQuery, integrating data from APIs, databases, files, webhooks and event streams.
• Shape the engineering approach across GCP using BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Datastream, Cloud Composer/Airflow, Terraform and infrastructure‑as‑code.
• Set and champion high standards for data modelling, dbt transformations, testing, monitoring, documentation, deployment, version control and cost optimisation.
• Partner with business teams to turn requirements into reusable data products, pulling data from sources such as Companies House, HMRC, Exchange Online, Active Directory and iManage.
• Embed security, governance and data quality by design, ensuring GDPR compliance, least‑privilege access and proper handling of sensitive information.
• Provide technical leadership, mentor engineers and analysts, and help shape the Innovation Team roadmap.

Required profile

• 5+ years of hands‑on experience in data engineering or analytics engineering, preferably at a senior or leadership level.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, able to translate complex technical concepts for non‑technical audiences.
• Collaborative leadership style with a focus on coaching, knowledge sharing and raising engineering standards.

Required skills

• Advanced SQL and Python.
• Google Cloud Platform (BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Datastream, Cloud Composer/Airflow).
• Data engineering tools: dbt, Terraform, Git/GitHub, CI/CD pipelines.
• Data modelling, dimensional modelling, orchestration, testing, data quality and operational monitoring.
• Experience building production‑grade pipelines from APIs, databases, flat files and message queues.
• Strong understanding of data security, governance and GDPR compliance.
