Senior Development Underwriter – Commercial Insurance

About the role

This senior development underwriting position sits at the heart of a leading commercial insurer’s Mid‑Market and Mid‑Corporate strategy in Scotland. You will combine business development with technical underwriting to drive profitable new business and strengthen broker relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Present tailored propositions for large Mid‑Market and Mid‑Corporate risks, leveraging deep industry knowledge.
• Collaborate with internal Trading Underwriters to negotiate coverage, wording and pricing.
• Build and manage a robust pipeline of qualified new‑business opportunities across Scotland.
• Lead the large‑case management process for new business and own the end‑to‑end placement cycle.
• Develop and maintain senior broker (and occasional direct client) relationships, ensuring generation, placement and retention of profitable business.
• Underwrite new and existing business in line with underwriting controls and act as a referral point for the branch.
• Design and execute a distribution strategy and communication plan with key brokers to meet financial KPIs.
• Monitor regional book performance and provide insights for growth.

Required profile

• Expert P&C technical underwriting knowledge with a strong track record in the Scottish market.
• Proven ability to secure and retain large, complex commercial business through senior broker relationships.
• Demonstrable technical and sales experience at Mid‑Market or Mid‑Corporate level.
• Strong pipeline management and insight development capabilities.
• Excellent personal impact – comfortable presenting, negotiating and persuading senior stakeholders.
