About the role
Lightning AI, the company behind PyTorch Lightning, is looking for a Senior Infrastructure Software Engineer to join its Infrastructure Engineering team. The team builds the software that runs and manages the company's large-scale GPU and bare-metal infrastructure, developing services, APIs, tooling and automation that connect physical infrastructure to customer AI/ML training, inference and HPC workloads. The role is software-first, combining software engineering with Linux systems and hardware-aware automation, and works closely with Infrastructure, Networking, Data Center Operations and Platform Engineering teams.
The role may be fully remote within the U.S. or hybrid out of one of the office hubs (NYC, SF, Seattle or London), with occasional offsites. Visa sponsorship is not available at this time.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build and operate production services, APIs, tooling and automation for managing large-scale bare-metal and GPU infrastructure.
- Build systems for server discovery, provisioning, configuration, validation and lifecycle management, and automate infrastructure bring-up and capacity deployment.
- Build telemetry, logging and observability, and tools to diagnose and respond to infrastructure and hardware issues.
- Partner with Network, Infrastructure Operations, Data Center and Platform Engineering teams, write design documents and take part in architectural discussions.
Required profile
- 5+ years of professional software engineering, infrastructure engineering or related experience.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience building production backend systems in Python or a similar object-oriented language.
- Strong Linux experience in production environments.
- Experience building APIs, tooling or automation for infrastructure at scale, and familiarity with containerization and orchestration.
- Understanding of HPC and bare-metal infrastructure, including provisioning and out-of-band management.
- Experience in a fast-paced startup or similar environment with a high degree of ownership.
Required skills
- Ideal: bare-metal troubleshooting and provisioning (PXE/iPXE, BMC, Redfish, IPMI, especially Dell hardware).
- Ideal: GPU servers, bare-metal or virtualized.
- Ideal: network switches, routers and firewalls (SONiC, Palo Alto, Juniper Networks).
- Ideal: high-performance storage systems (VAST) and AI/ML or HPC infrastructure at scale.
What we offer
- Anticipated base salary of $180,000-$220,000 USD, plus discretionary bonus, equity and benefits.
- Medical, dental and vision coverage, RSUs, 401(k) matching (U.S.) and pension contributions (U.K.).
- Unlimited PTO, company holidays, two weeks of winter break, paid parental and family leave.
- Annual learning and development allowance, wellness and work-from-home stipends, paid sabbatical after four years, flexible schedules and in-office meals.
