Senior Machine Learning Research Engineer

About the role

Relation is a TechBio company focused on transformational medicines. The Senior Machine Learning Research Engineer will bridge cutting‑edge ML theory and production‑grade systems, building generative and predictive models of cellular behaviour. You will work in interdisciplinary teams alongside biologists, data scientists and engineers in state‑of‑the‑art wet and dry labs in London.

Key responsibilities

• Implement and optimise large neural network models, partnering with ML Scientists to translate research ideas into scalable training pipelines.
• Design and deploy distributed training strategies across multi‑GPU and multi‑node configurations, profiling and improving compute, memory and I/O performance.
• Build and maintain core ML infrastructure for training, evaluation and inference, ensuring reliability for downstream biological workflows.
• Contribute to architectural decisions, bring engineering judgment to research discussions, and track advances in ML systems.

Required profile

• Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics or a related quantitative discipline.
• Industry experience as an ML/research engineer working on large neural network training.
• Proven track record of taking prototype research code to robust, reusable infrastructure used by others.

Required skills

• Strong software engineering fundamentals in Python.
• Deep expertise with PyTorch or equivalent modern ML frameworks.
• Hands‑on experience with distributed training, GPU workload profiling and optimisation.
• Working knowledge of cloud‑based ML infrastructure and containerised environments.
• Bonus: CUDA/Triton kernel development, FlashAttention implementations, foundation models for biology or vision.
